When to go
For much of India, October to March brings pleasant weather. The hills are popular in summer, and the monsoon (roughly June to September) turns the countryside green but can disrupt travel.
Classic routes
- The Golden Triangle: Delhi, Agra and Jaipur
- Kerala's backwaters, hills and beaches
- Rajasthan's forts and desert towns
- The Himalayas: Himachal, Uttarakhand, Ladakh and Sikkim
- Temples and coast of Tamil Nadu
Getting around
Trains are an experience in themselves and can be booked through IRCTC. Domestic flights save time on long distances, and many cities have good metro systems.
Visas
Many nationalities can apply for an Indian e-Visa online. Check the official government website before travelling.
